Special projects

The CHIMERA Project at INFN LNS Catania, Italy

SCIONIX has completed in 2000 this 1200 segment
scintillation crystal project consisting of a set of rings and a sphere. The CsI(Tl) scintillation crystals are coupled to large area PIN silicon photodiodes for readout of the scintillation
light. The crystals are preceded by silicon detectors.

The picture below shows the detector system viewed from the target. For more details visit  : http://lnsuni2.lns.infn.it/~chimera

The IBIS /  INTEGRAL Project

On the X-ray telescope IBIS on board of ESA’s INTEGRAL mission an array of 5000 X-ray detection elements are present called PiCsiT. These crystal elements are read out with custom made photodiodes High light output and good energy resolution are important factors here. Below the scintillation elements are shown before their testing under thermal vacuum conditions. For more information visit : http://www.sci.esa.int/integral

The EXOGAM Project

To study the behaviour of exotic nuclei, an array of large volume HpGe detectors is being constructed at GANIL France. These large segmented HpGe detectors will be surrounded by a segmented Anti-Compton shield of BGO and CsI(Na) scintillation crystals. This segmented suppression consists of three parts which can be used independently. The entire mechanics is made to high tolerances. Below such a segmented suppression shield is shown.
